Viagra and other male impotence drugs are in the same class as the blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. Pfizer, the maker of the blue diamond, will begin selling the Viagra trademark in the fall of 2003. But the company is still trying to win.
As the company prepares to launch its own version of Viagra, Pfizer has been trying to get it to begin selling the impotence drug, but its spokesman, Dr. Charles Warner, has said the firm's patent on the drug will expire by the end of this year. But the FDA has approved it in Europe, where it is expected to begin selling the erectile dysfunction drug later this year.
For now, Viagra is the only other available medicine approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug is used to treat the symptoms of male impotence in men. It is available in 50 mg and 100 mg tablets.
Viagra, which was approved in 1998, has been the world's top selling medicine since its introduction in 1998. It was developed by Pfizer Inc., and it has become one of the best-selling drugs ever. In its first month of sales, Viagra sales topped $535 million in the United States, according to IMS Health.
The drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, said it has received more than 10,000 requests from patients who have bought it, including more than 3,500 patients in other countries. Pfizer says the number is increasing because of the increasing demand for Viagra, which is expected to cost consumers $1,500 to $2,500 this year.
But some doctors have expressed concern that the drug may not be approved for use by the United States, where Viagra is sold as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Pfizer spokesman Dr. Charles Warner said, "We don't know if this drug will be approved for use in the United States."
The FDA has approved several different impotence drugs, including Cialis and Levitra, and Viagra, which the FDA first approved in 1998. The company has a patent for the drug that will expire in 2007. The product is not approved by the FDA, which requires the drug to be used "under the supervision of a healthcare professional" and "not for the treatment of any condition" such as benign prostatic hyperplasia.
